Why thinking out of the box is empty advice.
When we’re met with a problem / challenge that we cant solve the conventional way, we’re told to “think outside the box”
I’m here to propose something better, something that innovative companies like Apple, Samsung, Google and GE use all the time:
Design thinking simply is a new way of looking at problems.
Knowing how to use Design thinking is the superpower of the 21st century.
With design thinking you can :
- See a problem from different angles.
- Read people’s minds — Empathy
- Encourages you to ideate and fail.
- Propose solutions with concrete data.
- Come up with unconventional solutions
But why does this work?
Because logical problems call for emotional solutions. People are not robots. We’re chaotic, unpredictable, and irrational.
We start from the core of the issue, — People, customers, users.
The Information Age changed the way we use things.
When websites and apps took over, it was about the users the narrative changed from (What can we sell, to How can we help?)
Customers valued companies that “saw” them as people and not as cash cows.
The beauty of design thinking is that it allows you to make mistakes, test assumptions.
It’s building the plane while flying.
