Why everyone is wrong about Papyrus (Including You)

Papyrus is not an ugly font, it’s just old and misused

In 1993, I was introduced to the PC. It opened up a whole new world to me, and along with it was fonts like, Comic Sans, Papyrus and Jester. It was those typefaces that ignited my love for graphic design.

Dubbed as the king of ugly fonts, I would beg to disagree here’s why:

Papyrus is a well designed typeface

Papyrus wasn’t designed haphazardly.

It took Chris Costello 6 months to design and submit Papyrus, Papyrus was hand drawn on rough paper to mimic what writing during the bible era would look like. He digitized it and traced every imperfection, nook and valley.

Every part of Papyrus was intentional.

You’re using it wrong.

You hate Papyrus because you’re using it wrong.

Typefaces have use cases.

There are typefaces that are best used as display text, while others shine as for text. When you use a display face for text, you end up with problems and vice versa.

Papyrus ushered in Modern Graphic Design

Because Papyrus came with Microsoft Windows, It showed me what a good typeface can do. And that fonts do so much without saying a lot.

I’ve used Papyrus in identity design and my client loved it. (and I’m sure you did too!)

Tools do not a designe make. Knowing what to do with the tools does. Fonts are just tools. The right tool for the right job, right?

We all are entitled to our opinions, we can like or dislike something, that’s our right.

But to shit on someone’s hard work and effort, isn’t right.

When I was writing this article, I thought I knew everything about the 2nd most hated font in all of design, but as I dug deep I’ve learned that there’s always more to this story than meets the eye.
